When replacing a hydro-mechanical lower unit, you will need a new shift cap and cable, or you can replace the cable and modify your cap to work with the full-mechanical lower unit. Hydro-Mechanical Shift Cap Modification When upgrading from hydro-mechanical to full-mechanical, you will need to replace the shift cable and modify your old shift cap to work with it. There are two tabs extending down under the cap. In some cases, the forward tab (see image) needs to be cut flush with the bottom of the cap to avoid interference with the installation.
