The old one was known as the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS), and had been in place for several years. However, various concerns about the effectiveness of TAKS in measuring the academic progress of students led to it being revamped. The new system is the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR. STAAR exams are widely considered to be much more difficult than the old TAKS tests. In addition, there are other changes, too.
For one thing, there are now twelve different STAAR 'end of course' (EOC) exams given at the high school level, which is a huge change. These tests are in Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II for the math portion; Biology, Chemistry, and Physics for the science portion; English I, English II, and English III for the English portion, and World Geography, World History, and US History for the Social Studies portion.
Each of these tests is very specific, as opposed to the TAKS subject exams, which were much broader. Another change is that STAAR scores will count for 15 percent of a student's final grade in that subject area.
Also, you'll need to write two essays a year, in a particular style, in order to pass the English portion. As you can see, the STAAR exams means that receiving your high school diploma is going to be a lot tougher than it would have been just a few years ago. There's no need to despair, though, because with the proper guidance and preparation you can pass the various exams and get that all important diploma.
